My New Journal Reading experience

Previously when I found some relevant and interesting Journal papers, I printed all of them, read them and highlighted with sighted pen. From time to time, I kept a great amount of printed journal papers and it costed me a lot of time and space to category and file them. Now with iPad, just click the pdf file button from the Journal sites with my library search, the pdf is then transferred to my iBook. All my relevant and interesting Journal papers are now in my iBook of iPad. It changes my reading habbit.

iPad experience

I received my iPad for week and it really creates a new learning experience to me. For social networking and Internet browsing, it is really the most convenient tool I ever used, on condition to wi fi connection. In reading e-mail, all attached MS office document are readable. with it's big screen, iPhone can't be compaired. At the same time, with some freeware, I can convert all my must-be-reading papers into ebook format, which can be viewed and annotated by iBook apps. It is meaningless that if I can only view but not making any highlight of important points. In addition, all iBook files are linked to google search and wikipidia. While reading, just double click a word, automatically you can search either google or wikipedia on the meaning or background information. Of course, not to mention to the so many apple apps covering various interests. With the apps, you can change iPad to whatever purposes you like.

Blogs function in MS Word 2007   I am now writing on MS Word 2007 while it has a new function to connect to blogger. After some login procedure, it seems I can write on my Word and then no need to go to blogger.

Should we need to invent to develop our own digital learning platform

Three Univeristies are going to purchase iPad and giving to students for mobile learning. CourseSmart is a app in iPhone, now iPad which provides a a lot of text book online. Students can easily download the textbook and view on the big screen iPad. Since the technology is so advance, should HK government build their own platform for e-learning? Do they think they will create platform better than Apple? Take a look the link and the embedded video, it is really e-learning at any time and any place. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/04/ipad-textbooks/

Online highlight and annotation

Last week I attended HKU CITE 2010 symposium on the topic about Learning 2.0. One of the secondary teachers presented a freeware IE plugin Diigo which can highlight webpages and make annotation. He applied the tool for students make note of online newspaper reading and then students can share and categorize each other annotation on news. It is a wonderfull tool for teaching Liberal Studies. http://www.diigo.com/09rpk

learning at new digital world

iPad might be to large for mobile. During the lunar new year, I need to visit a lot of people. Just before the new year, I download Kindle into my iPod touch, and brought the latest book on "Multimodility" by Gunther Kress. Then during the lunar new year, I read my new book through iPod touch during all my travelling. I like it very much as I can highlight manin points, and made notes on my reading. When I reached my friends home, I took out the iPod touch and the kids liked to play with the games. Both Kindle or iPad might be too large for me if I needed to bring my umbella and some presensts to my friends. I like my iPod tocuh. It is really a e-learning, game and social networking platform.

Participatory culture

A lot of people are discussing those Post 80. People argue that there is no definition on Post 80, and the group size is small and should not be the topic of discussion. I am not in a position to define and comment on. However, I like to mention Participatory culture, web 2.0 (O'Reilly, 2003) and Digital Natives (Prensky, 2001). Reveiwing the blogs of Henry Jenkins, he has tried to relate O'Reilly web2.0 with the participatory culture. Jenkins defined the Participatory culture as "A participatory culture is a culture with relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one's creations, and some type of informal mentorship whereby what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices. A participatory culture is also one in which members believe their contributions matter, and feel some degree of social connection with one another. Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from one of indiv

Stephen Heppell: Railway as school, going the wrong way

Hong Kong people are having hot debate on building a great railway costing 68 billion. The so called Post 80 (those born after 80') strongly against the railway as it is too expensive and not necesary. Stephen Heppell, famous ICT scholar, gave a speech about Learning at 2016, mentioned that a few years ago UK built a perfect railway but however, people brought their own cars. Stephen mentioned our school is same as the railway, mobile learning is having great breakthrough on learning while we still regard our school as a perfect railway. Part of Stephen's speech is attached as some hints about railway, school and the pattern of post 80 learning. Full version of Stephen speech http://www.teachers.tv/video/4957

Wonderful MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro is really an up-to-date technology. I just uploaded all my cat's photos into Mac, used iPhoto face recognized function to categorize all my cat's photos under one folder. Just clicked on SlideShow function, all the photos were then sent to a defaut slide show template, I can even choose my faviourte music. Besides shifting between different templates, I can choose between duration of each photos or fit to the selected music duration. Finally, the whole photo MV can be output to mp4 and then uploaded to YouTube. All the process is within one or two hours, mostly were on selection of photos and the sequence of photos. Since the mp4 is stored in iTunes, of course it can be downloaded to my iPod Touch. What should I say?
