During the lunar new year, I need to visit a lot of people. Just before the new year, I download Kindle into my iPod touch, and brought the latest book on "Multimodility" by Gunther Kress. Then during the lunar new year, I read my new book through iPod touch during all my travelling. I like it very much as I can highlight manin points, and made notes on my reading. When I reached my friends home, I took out the iPod touch and the kids liked to play with the games. Both Kindle or iPad might be too large for me if I needed to bring my umbella and some presensts to my friends. I like my iPod tocuh. People argue that there is no definition on Post 80, and the group size is small and should not be the topic of discussion.

I am not in a position to define and comment on. However, I like to mention Participatory culture, web 2.0 (O'Reilly, 2003) and Digital Natives (Prensky, 2001). Reveiwing the blogs of Henry Jenkins, he has tried to relate O'Reilly web2.0 with the participatory culture. Jenkins defined the Participatory culture as

"A participatory culture is a culture with relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one's creations, and some type of informal mentorship whereby what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices. A participatory culture is also one in which members believe their contributions matter, and feel some degree of social connection with one another. Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from one of individual expression to community involvement."

http://henryjenkins.org/2009/04/what_went_wrong_with_web_20_cr.html

Reveiwing some past soical issues in HK, starting from Bus Uncle, it marked out the convergence of YouTube web2.0 technology and participation by various YouTube fans. Then the WHO, Queen Piar, different Youtubes' version on debate segment in Legistative council, and those independent media (inmediahk). All match with the defintion of Participartory culture proposed by Jenkins. Post 80 might not be the point of discussion, but pariticpatory culture should be the focus in related to digital natives and web 2.0 technology. If you have faceboook account, have your own blogs and have posted video to YouTube, congratulation, you are in the participatory culture.

Stephen Heppell: Railway as school, going the wrong way

Hong Kong people are having hot debate on building a great railway costing 68 billion. The so called Post 80 (those born after 80') strongly against the railway as it is too expensive and not necesary. Stephen Heppell, famous ICT scholar, gave a speech about Learning at 2016, mentioned that a few years ago UK built a perfect railway but however, people brought their own cars. Stephen mentioned our school is same as the railway, mobile learning is having great breakthrough on learning while we still regard our school as a perfect railway. Part of Stephen's speech is attached as some hints about railway, school and the pattern of post 80 learning.

Full version of Stephen speech
http://www.teachers.tv/video/4957

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v4.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dc5b14dfba2bc84f6%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330405277%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D4CF4D98FC0BF3F6BB33A692C849D3C3A1BEF7449.6A7D86A656B83FFC97DF45C8B42572C44F2FA428%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dc5b14dfba2bc84f6%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DuAAmjlTigfSntvgJSixyrAJCdo4&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Wonderful MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro is really an up-to-date technology. I just uploaded all my cat's photos into Mac, used iPhoto face recognized function to categorize all my cat's photos under one folder. Just clicked on SlideShow function, all the photos were then sent to a defaut slide show template, I can even choose my faviourte music. Besides shifting between different templates, I can choose between duration of each photos or fit to the selected music duration. Finally, the whole photo MV can be output to mp4 and then uploaded to YouTube. All the process is within one or two hours, mostly were on selection of photos and the sequence of photos. You do not need to go to that sites, the materials go to your computer instead.

Out of your expectation, RTHK has uploaded a lot of programmes in iTunes U of US site, you can then subscribe RTHK with your iTunes.

The most amazing part is that the iTunes software is free for download. You do not need to buy any i-pod/iTouch/iPhone, you can use iTunes in your PC. Of course, if you have those i-Apple family, your mobile device can automatically have those famous Univeristies learning materials. A phenomenographic research conducted by Goodyear and Zenior has provided some insight for further discussion. However, I like their contribution in integrating Popper three world perspectives with Bereiter’s knowledge building and conceptual learning into the explanation of learning through online discussion.

According to Bereiter (2002), Popper (1972) has defined three world of knowledge:
World I: the objective physical world
World II: the subjective inner world of mental states, feelings and beliefs
World III: world of ideas

Bereiter further elaborated that student learning at school mostly is under world II. Both WI and WII assumed that mind is like a container where knowledge is something that can be moved from teacher’s mind to student’s mind under the industrial age society. The world I objective physical knowledge has been transformed into book and knowledge in school and taught by teacher to individual mind as individual knowledge under world II. However, world I and world II cannot explain progressive knowledge development which can’t be located in world I or world II. Bereiter introduced conceptual artifacts under three basic assumptions of knowledge in the knowledge age:

World 3 are entirely human creations

These human creations are fallible but improvable, knowledge becomes something you can work with

These human creations take on a life of their own, independent of their creators

Goodyear and Zenios highlighted that WII learning is personal while WIII is about knowledge building which is public. Conceptual learning is about the development of individual learning in WII but the knowledge learned is not enough for students to create new knowledge in the ever changing knowledge based society. As a result, collaborative online discussion is a way to engage students moving from individual WII individual learning to WIII collaborative knowledge construction on discourses production which is a kind of conceptual artifacts co-constructed by students.

Goodyear Zenios remarked that text is the main mode of discourse used in the production of conceptual artifacts in the online discussion platform. It is wonder whether multimode discourses (Jewitt, 2008) can be treated as conceptual artifacts triggering collaborative knowledge construction among students in the digital age society.

Invisible learning and Visible Learning

What is invisible learning?

Academic Commons ( http://academiccommons.org/) provide a valuable resources about invisible learning and visible learning. In their project "A collaborative case study on technology and learning, from the Visible knowledge project", a lot of research reports are given showing the importance of inquiry, new ICT platform and evidence of leanring.

In traditional classroom, teachers design a teaching objective, with appropriate teaching strategies then students demonstrate their learning in assessment. We only know that students' learning through assessment, the learning process is invisible.

Academic Commons claim that the new ICT platfrom provide an important platform turns the invisible learning into visible knowledge which demonstrates the evidence of learning. On the second day eight presenters gave various speech about using Web2.0 for teaching and learning activities. The Q&A time raised a hot debate on whether there is a new way of learning. Of course, all Web2.0 is about user generated knowledge rather than knowledge transmission. It will of course trigger a lot of disucssion as most of the teachers in HK get used to tradition instructional approach, using web2.0 for knowledge construction is out of their comfort zone.

Yesterday, Prof Nicola Yelland gave a speech in my Institute on topic about "Critical issues for learning in the 21st Century: Multiliteracies, new technologies and knowledge building". Nicola also touched on the issue about new way of learning. Our education system is mainly developed for industrial age, should we consider to change our education system to fit for the new technological age. Nicola proposed that the curriculum should be shifted to knowledge generation under the digital technology trend. She also mentioned Literacy, Literacies and Multilieracies proposed by New London Group. Today kids are quite different as before and a new multimodality re-mix culture is emerging.

Of course, after the presentation, there was some debate on the new way of learning. Some academics insisted that traditional literacy should still be the main learning objective.

The debate will keep on though digital age has been developed far from we could re-think. To my opinion, 21st Century skills have proposed the essential skills for a digital society, though no concrete assessment to 21st Century skills have been proposed.

New platform provides integrated functions on learning objects, social bookmarking and Facebook

HKU has developed a new platform called RISAL which combined learning objects, social bookmarking and social networking functions. In traditional classrooms, literacy refers to learning with written mode. Students learn from verbal teaching, text books and express themselves in verbal presentation and written examination. Language is the major mode for teaching and learning. Student learning is conducted by verbal communication and written examination. Literacy is defined as the competency to express oneself knowledge in language (Jewitt, 2008).

Shifting to the ICT world, the context has been changed. Students are not limited to express themselves in traditional language mode (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006; Yue & Yuen, 2005). Nowadays students are called digital natives (Prensky, 2001) as they are actively participating in producing visual and media artefacts out of their school lives (Burn & Durran, 2007; Jenkins, 2006; Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006). Kress & van Leeuwen (2001) named the new way of expressing oneself as Multimodal Discourse. Meaning expression is situated at various modes including image, gesture, gaze, body posture, sound, writing, music, speech and so on. Language is just one of the various modes for meaning expression. We, in fact, communicate with multimodality in the digital world. Language might still be the dominant mode, but images, audio and video are getting important gradually. Blog, YouTube and Facebook provide a lot of good examples about effective communication in multiple modes. Multiliteracies are then defined as the literacies in managing multimodality to communicate with each others (Jewitt, 2008). Or simply we call the multiliteracies “new literacies” or “literacies” (Lankshear & Knobel, 2006).

From literacy to multimodality and literacies, should leaning be re-defined under the digital world? Jewitt (2008) suggested hypertext has redefined the relationships between reader, author and text. The shifting is from collection to connection. It opens a new horizon in the production of complex hybrid semiotic systems and new competency of literacies. Meaning expression is not limited to pure text, but a linkage of text to audio, video, graphic and web link, etc. (Jewitt, 2008). In contrast to the traditional taxonomies of print-based expression skills, Jewitt (2008) defined learning as process that “involves students in working across different sites of expression, negotiating and creating new flexible spaces for planning, thinking, hypothesizing, testing, designing, and realizing ideas."

With the new definitions of literacies and learning, the pedagogy in classroom should also be changed accordingly. Teachers are suggested to focus on pedagogic design on students learning processes. Students should be shifted to meaning construction that is related to their knowledge, experiences and interests. Meaning construction here includes engaging students in building multiple modes stories integrating their lives, experiences and cultural forms of representation. Cross-curricular multimode project involving student’s everyday knowledge and context-based learning might be one of the directions (Jewitt, 2008).

Putting these new concept of literacies, multimodality and learning into HK context, the new Senior Secondary School curriculum proposed Liberal Studies as the core subject. Under the Liberal Studies, students can select a non-written mode Independent Enquiry Project as a final school-based assessment. It is interesting that there seems some similar rationales behind the literacies, multimodality, learning and local non-written IES project.

Chatting with Roland van Oostveen

Roland, a ed tech scholar from Canada, visited our Institute in this week and we had a short sharing with him. He is a fully student-centered scholar and very keen on talking about the nature of knowledge. He adapted a full framework from Carl Bereiter as there are three knowledge of world. World one is the physical world and we can learn from experience. World two is the conceptual world that we learned from schools and books. World three is the artifacts that we built from interaction with W1 and W2. Under this framework, our teaching and learning should be shifted from teacher-centerd focusing on W1 and W2 to student-centered on W3 faciliating students to create their own knowledge by constructing artifacts.

How can the teachers in HK can adapt such framwork? Through the Pop Culture conference in HKIEd, I attended a series of presentations by David Buckingham and various media educators. A lot of hot issues have been discussed inlcuding: media education 2.0, media literacy, multiple literacies, visual semiotics, blog, web2.0 etc.

Yesterday, it is my pleasure for me to have a half hour consultation with David Buckingham. Prof Buckingham is full of wisdom and gave me a lot of reference readings upon my research agenda. To conclude, the visual analysis method on students' produced video is under development and the existing anaylsis tool is waiting for further research support.

In view of the non-written mode IES in Liberal Studies on the NSS curriculum, it is still a challanging job to develop a valid assessment tool under the school based assessment.

Visual semiotics: Pop culture education conference

Thanks for Jan Connelly shared with us such wonderful advsertisement demonstrating visual semiotics and intertextual meanings. David Buckingham in the pre-conference workshop expressed that visual semiotics and multimodality are using the methods of textual analysis but with new invented wordings. Here Jan presented "intertextual meanings" and made use of this to analyses with visual semiotics. To me, intertextual meanings" might have similar meaning as multimodality, both are talking the text, visual, sound and with social embedded meaning for interpretation. I like Jan's perspectives in "read with the text", "read across the text" and "read against the text". Social semiotcs are playing a role in interpretation. In fact, the following video is wonderful. Jewitt (2008) summarized Multiliteracies as literacies beyond traditional written and spoken litearcy to expressing ourselves with multiple and multimodal texts. Situated in the digital word, we communicate not limited to text, but visual, audio, video and all other new modes such as in Facebook and blog etc. We are expressing ourselves in Multimodal Discourse (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001). In summary, Jewitt (2008) remarked that multimodality is about meaning making through the situated configurations across image, gesture, gaze, body posture, sound , writing, music, speech ....

Next time don't blame that the youth are getting worse in expressing themselves in written or spoken language. They might be expert in expressing themselve in Facebook and YouTube.

New Literacies

Here comes the plural "New Literacies" again. Some people commended on the YouTube that why the New Media Literacies created new word "Literacies" and did not know what it is about.

However, more and more academics are using Literacies instead of literacy. In more simple words, under the digital world, we should have our competency to express ourselves beyond the traditional printed mode. Literacy is referring to the traditional competency in read, write and communicate with text. However, nowadays, we communicate and express ourselves in Facebook, Blog and all sorts of web2.0 technology beyond text, scuh as hypertext, sound, image manipulation, embedded video etc. The competency to communicate in these multimodalities is named as new literacies.

Here comes a video inspired by Gunther Kress about New Literacies.

New Media Literacies

We have two mindsets in facing the new brave technological world. There are no big change in economic, cultural, social world that has evolved throughout the modern era. Some are free and some are marked with price for subscription.

However, if you want to produce your own Podcasting station and for others to subscribe.
